Rewilding the cities – Giving back space formerly occupied by traffic
Mobility is becoming smart – multimodal, self-driving, service-based – all with the aim of removing privately owned cars from the city landscape. Today a large share of public space in cities is taken by cars, and as they disappear this space will be free to use.
This is an opportunity to bring nature back into our cities. Nature for the well of human beings and for biodiversity. Cities of the future need not be in opposition to nature. They need to become nature themselves. They need to become regenerative.
Join EIT Urban Mobility and EIT Climate KIC at the Danish Architecture Centre on 5 October for an Open Day organised as part of INNOVEIT to discuss the question: How can we embrace radical innovation and Rewild our Cities?
THE SPEAKERS
Leen Gorissen Founder, Centre4NI
As the keynote speaker Leen will kickstart the discussion, presenting on how natural intelligence can be used to respond to the current climate emergency and transform cities.
Leen holds a Ph.D. in Biology, is specialised in ecology, transition science, regenerative development and bio-inspired innovation. She is the author of the recent book ‘Building the Future of Innovation on millions of years of Natural Intelligence’ (https://www.naturalintelligence.info ) and the founder of Centre4NI (https://www.centre4ni.com), a catalyst that helps organizations and businesses to innovate like nature. She is a frequently asked evaluator of innovation projects by the European Commission, a thought leader on innovation for a better world, a practitioner of regenerative design and a strategist and business innovation process facilitator. She has worked for a broad range of clients and organized bio-inspired innovation sessions in cities across the world. From 2009-2017, Leen worked as a Transition Research Coordinator at the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO Belgium).
Kalle Toivonen, Senior Specialist, City of Helsinki
Kalle Toivenen is a senior specialist with the City of Helsinki, a member of the EIT Urban Mobility management board, and vice chair of the EIT Urban Mobility’s city club. He will reflect on and respond to the key note presentation from the perspective of the city.
Hilda Berg, Activist, Fridays for Futures
Hilda Berg is a student in Helsingborg and an activist and representative of the youth climate movement – Fridays for Futures. She will reflect on and respond to the key note presentation from the perspective of the future population.
Daniel Serra Ecosystem and Stakeholder Director, EIT Urban Mobility
Daniel is the ecosystem and stakeholder manager for EIT Urban Mobility. This means ensuring the community continues to grow and represent the forefront of mobility innovation across Europe. Daniel is a mobility expert, previously as the Executive Project Manager at CARNET (Future Mobility Research Hub), where he worked in the development of initial activities, setting up processes and research activities and leading projects like the Virtual Mobility Lab (the first macroscopic model of the Barcelona metropolitan region) or the creation of Mobility as a service Catalonia (MaaS Catalonia). Prior to this, he worked in the Automotive Industry for leading OEMs projects (Ford, Volvo, Land Rover, SEAT, VW, Daimler). Daniel is also collaborating with ESADE Business School in several MBA courses as a mentor.
Torben Klitgaard CEO, BLOXHUB
BLOXHUB is a business matchmaking and facilitating community, a co-working space and a research incubator for everyone who works with sustainable urbanization.
As Hub Director, Torben bridges architecture, engineering, design, construction and digitization to develop and scale sustainable urbanization initiatives. He is a driving force behind the BLOXHUB activities, facilitations and programs which are designed to unlock and develop the full potential of BLOXHUB members’s growth through partnerships on both a national and international scale.
Torben Klitgaard has degrees in M.Sc in Economics, a M.Sc in Information Management and a MBA in construction and is a Wharton Fellow in strategic leadership. As an experienced executive with a demonstrated history of working in the architecture and planning industry, Torben has a substantial track record of working in the fields of government, management consulting, entrepreneurship and tech.
