Floware Vision: Comprehensive Bicycle Traceability and Safety Monitoring Solution for Vitoria-Gasteiz’s Cycling Network

Floware deploys Edge AI sensors and smart IoT tags for real-time monitoring, with the aim of improving cycling safety and infrastructure in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

Project summary

The Floware Vision project in Vitoria-Gasteiz aims to improve cycling safety and infrastructure using advanced monitoring technologies. The city faces challenges in effectively tracking cycling activities, optimising bike lane usage, and ensuring cyclist safety due to a lack of precise data. Inspired by the need for sustainable and safer urban mobility, Floware is developing an innovative solution combining IoT sensors and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) tags with Edge AI and computer vision technologies.

The project’s main objective is to collect accurate, real-time data on cycling patterns and infrastructure usage to improve decision-making for urban mobility planning. By integrating Floware’s bike tracking technology with its SaaS data analytics platform, the project aims to deliver detailed insights into cycling habits, optimise bike lane management, improve safety measures and promote sustainable transportation practices.

The project will bring together two teams. In Vitoria-Gasteiz, a dedicated team will be led by Juan Carlos Escudero Achiaga (Head of the Mobility and Data Science Unit), Asier Sarasua Garmendia and Isabel Garnika Ortiz. At Floware, a diverse team will be led by Julian Garbiso (CEO) and Mathieu Lafarge (COO), along with specialists in AI, IoT, data science, and design. The kick-off will take place in August 2024, followed by system design and customisation in October, and installation, testing and validation in November. The in-situ demonstration is scheduled for December 2024 in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain.

By deploying smart sensors at strategic locations, the project will provide valuable data to local government, public transport authorities and infrastructure providers, helping to optimise resources and improve safety. The anticipated outcomes include increased transparency and traceability of cycling data, better infrastructure use, and a safer, more efficient urban cycling environment.
