From December 2020 onwards, EIT Urban Mobility Academy will be releasing online content and courses on different key aspects of urban mobility. During this inaugural period, free access will be granted to all these courses developed in collaboration with leading universities and mobility experts.
Three different channels adapted to our busy lives
- The EIT Urban Mobility Academy WebTV will allow you to access a wide variety of short videos (1 to 5 minutes) that showcase cutting-edge practices in urban mobility in Europe.
- The EIT Urban Mobility Academy Small Free Online Courses (SFOCs), will provide you with an introductory understanding of key urban mobility issues and enable you to discover useful tools and good practices.
- The EIT Urban Mobility Academy Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), will provide you with an in-depth understanding/ analysis of key urban mobility concepts, developments and controversies, that will support you professionally to make urban mobility more effective and sustainable.
Urban planning and tactical urbanism
By releasing its first MOOC “Designing the cycling city”, co-developed with HumanKind, Competence Hub put the spotlight on sustainable urban planning and on tactical urbanism.
This course is directed by Lior Steinberg and George Liu, two strong cycling activists and recognized academics. It provides insightful knowledge on how to design cities to be more cycling friendly. This five-week course explores the best practices in bicycle infrastructure design and how to bring these elements to your own city/ home context. It also includes a final design project that enables participant to develop a plan for transforming the street of his choice.

Urban planning and tactical urbanism has also been addressed in various videos within the EIT Urban Mobility Academy WebTV:
The Covid-19 pandemic has rapidly driven change in cities for more sustainable means of urban mobility. In collaboration with RMIT University, the EIT Urban Mobility WebTV has traveled to London, Barcelona and Milan to discover three agile approaches to tackle the Covid-19 challenge. These initiatives provide interesting examples of how tactical urbanism, the use of low cost, short term and scalable solutions to initiate long term changes in cities, has been successfully used by cities over the past few months.
The Barcelona Superblocks are also another good example of tactical urbanism. In a series of five videos, Salvador Rueda – one of the founding fathers of the Superblock concept – explains what these traffic-free neighborhoods are about and what they can achieve.
This ambitious model has inspired many cities around Europe, such as Brussels. The Minister of Brussels-Capital Region in charge of Mobility, Public Works and Road Safety, Elke Van den Brandt, explains how the ‘Good Move’ project is transforming mobility in Brussels.
In Stockholm, the ‘Future Streets’ project enabled the temporary redesign of three streets close to schools to give more space back to people. Interviewed for the WebTV, Dan Hill – Director of strategic design at Vinnova and Tobias Nordström – CEO and Urban Planner at Spacescape – explain how the project also included the children of the schools at an early stage in the design process.

In the coming weeks, EIT Urban Mobility Academy will be releasing new e-learning courses on urban planning:
‘Understanding cycling in Europe’ a MOOC co-developed with the Cycling Research Review, will explore the evolution of the design of bicycle infrastructure in cities.
‘Superblocks: rethinking cities and urban space for citizens’ is a SFOC that will provide a compelling overview of this interesting new urban mobility model that is transforming cities around Europe.
‘Free visualisation tools for urban mobility planning’ [beginner/intermediate] are a series of two SFOCs that will teach urbanists how to visualise their idea and bring good urbanism practices to action via free online software tools.
