Mobile urban nano-hubs for efficient, decarbonised and sustainable city logistics with cargo bikes

Project summary

The project aims to revolutionise city logistics by integrating cargo bikes with advanced, sustainable nano-hub parking solutions. This initiative addresses the critical challenges of urban freight movement, particularly the congestion and pollution typically associated with traditional delivery trucks in city centres.

The project’s approach leverages compact, modular nano-hubs strategically placed throughout the city to serve as trans-shipment points where goods are transferred from larger vehicles to cargo bikes for last-mile delivery. This system significantly reduces the distance that diesel or gasoline-powered vehicles travel within urban areas, thus lowering greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.

The nano-hub’s design as an autonomous urban depot occupying only half a parking space (5m2) directly addresses urban space constraints, making it a more feasible option for cities struggling with limited available land and high real estate costs. Unlike traditional logistics hubs that require significant space and infrastructure investments, nano-hubs can be deployed quickly and efficiently in strategic urban locations, offering flexibility and reducing the need for cargo bikes to travel long distances for reloading.

The project promotes a scalable and replicable model that can be adapted to various urban environments. By transforming city logistics into a more agile and eco-friendly system, the project supports the broader goals of sustainable urban development and decarbonisation, contributing directly to the reduction of the urban carbon footprint and fostering a shift towards more sustainable transportation modes.
