ROAD System

Social Tech Projects’ ROAD System for future mobility

Project summary

This project promotes the uptake of transportation via bicycle by improving infrastructure and safety. Social Tech Projects’ ROAD System is a road scanning tool uses Internet of Things (IoT) devices installed on bicycles to collect various types of data from urban cycle infrastructure and the environment. The bicycle device provides a comprehensive road assessment by analysing data collected on a range of factors such as: road user experience, road quality, air quality, noise level, physical separation of road users, mobility flow, road markings, road signage, light conditions, etc. The insights generated by the tool are derived from artificial intelligence, 5G, IoT and big data analysis.

By incorporating the ROAD System tool into existing mobility plans, cities and authorities can make more informed decisions about cycling infrastructure and ensure their investments in cycling lanes are well-targeted and effective in improving safety and accessibility of cyclists. The ROAD System was tested in six major Danish cities as well as the DOLL Living Lab – the largest European Living Lab for Smart City Solutions. The ROAD System User Dashboard provides a GIS web app-based interface that allows users to visualise the cycle lane conditions in interactive maps, including custom base maps, heatmap visualisations, and linear and area measurements. The ROAD System solution provides a safer, cleaner and better means to manage cycle roads. As a result, citizens have access to more sustainable transport options, leading to a higher quality of life and reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.
