Promoting Walkability for Children and Youth

Project summary

sCOOL2walk aims to get families walking to school. The project matches people together to share their walk to and from school. The benefits are many. Traffic congestion and pollution around schools is reduced and fewer vehicles also means safer streets. Families become more active and children gain a greater feeling of independence and awareness of their surroundings. Communities are strengthened by greater interaction and more usable streets..

Context

• Promote walkability among kids and school ecosystems. • Increase active mobility rates. • Help children develop a sense of independence and awareness of their environment.

Challenge

To encourage car users to switch to more sustainable mobility by walking their children to school.

Expected outcome

• Technological solution (web app) to create a walking rideshare community. • Piloting the tool in three European cities: Barcelona, Siġġiewi (Malta) and Riga. • Dissemination of the results in Malta, December 2023.
