The MARKED project aims to enhance the MOB+ platform in Vila Nova de Gaia to encourage walking and cycling as
primary modes of transport. This initiative integrates community insights and existing digital data to map safe and accessible cycling and walking routes. We will develop an innovative and intuitive routing system and introduce physical wayfinding elements.
Currently, only 10% of commuters in Gaia choose to walk or cycle, with 70% using private motor vehicles. The limited information on the MOB+ platform and similar apps does not support users in selecting sustainable travel options. This project aims to make the platform more beneficial and user-friendly by providing clear, accessible information on walking and cycling routes, improving safety, and promoting active travel.
The project is set to begin in August 2024 and run through December 2024 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. During this period, we will conduct workshops, develop and test the routing system, and implement physical wayfinding elements.
Our goal is to increase the use of active travel modes, thereby reducing CO2 emissions and promoting healthier lifestyles. The project’s success will be measured by the number of platform users, the frequency of route functionality usage, and the overall increase in pedestrian and cyclist counts. By improving the MOB+ platform and providing easy-to-follow routes, we aim to make Gaia a model for sustainable urban mobility.
The project will bring together Orchy MG Ltd, the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, EiT Urban Mobility, local community groups, and mobility professionals.
