Request for proposals Training programme on cargo bikes for sustainable urban mobility in German cities

11 August 2023

By the present procurement procedure, the EIT KIC Urban Mobility S.L. hereby being referred to as “EIT UM” is aiming to identify a supplier capable of designing and delivering a multiannual face to face (F2F) training course on the topic of ´Cargo bikes for sustainable urban mobility´.

Europe is at the forefront of efforts to decarbonize transport, employing diverse solutions. With 75% of EU citizens residing in cities of varying size, geography, and local economy, European urban centers are facing the challenge of establishing efficient, resilient, and low-emission transport networks that enhance livability, economic activity, and environmental sustainability. Urban freight logistics significantly impacts cities economically, environmentally, and socially, leading to increased traffic, congestion, noise, and pollution. Recently, there has been a notable increase in goods vehicle traffic within cities, driven primarily by the surge in e-commerce, especially during the pandemic. This trend is expected to continue, posing one of the most critical challenges for urban areas. However, addressing urban logistics is complex, involving multiple stakeholders, and often public administrations lack the knowledge necessary to implement effective solutions. Cargo bikes excel in the last-mile delivery, ,making them an efficient and eco-friendly option for sustainable and quiet cities. A German context reveals insights from the nationwide German Bike Monitor 2021 survey, indicating a shifting attitude towards cargo bikes. While 54% of individuals are aware of cargo bikes, their current utilization stands at only 2%, presenting an opportunity for targeted professional training. Such training can cater to the specific needs of public administrators, sustainability managers, and urban planners, empowering them to develop and implement policies, incentives, and urban designs that embrace cargo bikes as a sustainable transportation option.

The general objective of the face-to-face (F2F) training course on the topic of ´Cargo bikes for sustainable urban mobility´ is to equip participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical strategies to promote and implement cargo bikes effectively, transforming their municipalities into thriving cargo bike friendly cities in context of German cities.
